About Heavyweight Explosion

Heavyweight Explosion was one of the most popular fight series in the 1990s and early 21st Century and was promoted by both Boxing and MMA promoters, including the late Cedric Kushner, World Extreme Cagefighting and our own Lion Heart Boxing Productions.

Our company, Lion Heart Boxing Productions, promoted several Heavyweight Explosion card at Twiropa Club in New Orleans and other venues in Louisiana as well as in Salt Lake City, Utah, including at the Delta Center (now Vivint Arena).

World Extreme Cagefighting did a version of Heavyweight Explosion including WEC 13: Heavyweight Explosion. WEC 13: Heavyweight Explosion was a mixed martial arts event promoted by World Extreme Cagefighting on January 22, 2005 at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, California. The card featured a 4-man Heavyweight Tournament featuring Brandon Veraas well as single fights which saw the likes of Jason “The Punisher” LambertBrad Imes, and MMA legend “Mr. International” Shonie Carter compete.

Live from New York, Cedric Kushner promoted a version he called The Heavyweight Explosion and had it staged monthly at manhattan’s Hammerstein Ballroom. Kushner’s Heavyweight Explosion was a bacchanal of hipness, and included break dancing, massages and big left hooks.  Some events even features book signing and other cutting edge.

Lion Heart Boxing Productions’ version of  Heavyweight Explosion (Heavyweight Explosion and Night of the Heavies) strictly focused on the fights, exciting and explosive fights featuring ordinary and known boxers the likes of Rob Calloway, Big Fred Kassi, Gary Bell and Jerome Tabb.

Heavyweight Explosion 2.0 is a revival of the Heavyweight Explosion series in large part to promote the comeback fights of former top ten contender JD “The Natural” Chapman (31-0). Also featuring on the series will be Kenzie Morrison (17-0), the son of Tommy Gunn Morrison from the Rocky movies franchise. His undefeated brother Trey Morrison (18-0), might feature as feasible, subject to promoter approval.

The Genesis Episode:Heavyweight Explosion 2.0

The genesis episode of the new Heavyweight Explosion, aptly called Heavyweight Explosion 2.0, will be held on September 24, 2021, at the Sugar Creek Casino in Hinton, Oklahoma.  The main event features American Heavyweight Contender JD “The Natural” Chapman (30-1, 26 KO’s), who continues his surprise comeback against an opponent to be announced.

Chapman returned to Boxing on June 5, 2021, after a thirteen-year layoff. At the time of his retirement, Chapman was ranked by just about every rating organizing and was considered to have one of America’s best chances at reclaiming the Heavyweight title. With his return, Chapman immediately became one of the most talked about heavyweight contenders.

In the Co-Main event, Kenzie Morrison (17-0-2), the son of a boxing legend and also a legitimate Heavyweight Contender, faces an opponent to be announced.  Morrison takes inspiration from his dad Tommy Gunn Morrison, the late heavyweight world champion who is last Heavyweight World Champion to come out of Oklahoma.  Tommy Gunn Morrison was a larger-than-life celebrity who was internationally renowned not only for his boxing but also for starring in the Rocky movie franchise.

As always, Heavyweight Explosion will feature top heavyweights and other exciting fighters, including boxers from the international scene such as Djamel Dahou (16-0) as well as plenty of local stars to be determined.

The event will be streamed live as a pay per view on Fite TV and Baby Don TV for $29.99.
